Ego is an active, dynamic part of our personality, playing an immense role in creating emotional drama in our lives. When we have thoughts about ourselves that we agree with, we construct a self image. The ego hides behind the ‘I’ and ‘ME’ in all the declarative thoughts and statements we think to be true about our identity. The ego is difficult to see, but it can be traced behind opinions that appear true. The easiest way to spot ego is by watching the trail of emotional reactions it leaves behind; anger at a loved one, a need to be right, a feeling of insecurity or jealousy for unexplained reasons and so on.
And with that, there comes a situation when we are unable to differentiate between ego and self respect. It is important to know each one of them, for they form the very basic foundation of setting healthy boundaries in one’s life.
Ego particularly is when we prioritize our own selves.
Why is this happening to me only?
What I did was right, then why do I have to face this? And so on.
Ego is when we involve a second someone and compare ourselves with them; Either they are placed at a superior level or you are. There is no sense of acceptance towards ourselves and others.
Self respect, on the other hand is when you have that acceptance for yourself. You realize your actions/mistake and then put it on the table to analyze where things went wrong. It is a mindset where no other person is involved. You don’t condemn anyone nor boost yourself up. You just accept things, learn and move on.
The ego is to hold on and making comparisons with others, whereas self respect is to observe and let go while embracing your own strengths and happiness.
So, next time be careful that it is not the ego masking behind self respect and taking a control over your life.
Blessings always be with you.
Love and respect!
